Summary:

Cat ColvinAverage Teenager?Or Something Else Entirely?
Cat Colvin is pretty much your typical run-of-the-mill teenager. Sure, she’s taller than most girls, has a mane of fiery red hair that’s impossible to tame, is left-handed, and her eyes are two different colors, but that’s where the differences end... unless you include the minor detail of her slow transformation into a Childe.
High school can definitely be challenging, and for Cat it’s no different. This is especially true when she’s faced with the daunting task of trying to hide her budding Childe traits as they begin to reveal themselves at the most inopportune times. To make matters worse, her family is oddly dead set against Ryan, the boy she grows to like. But everyone has their secrets: is Ryan really what he seems to be, and what is Cat’s family not telling her?
The Childe is the first book in this coming-of-age fantasy series which follows Cat's life through the twists and turns toward finding out whom and what she really is. Come and take the plunge with Cat into a world filled with mystery, biting humor, and the paranormal.

My Review:

I thought this was terrific!  I really liked the plot!

This book is all about Cat and how she's different. She gets these scary nightmares about these weird things that happen. I'm a bit confused about what's going on though; Are those dreams actually happening right now? Or are they in the past.

I kinda like and kinda don't like Ryan. I don't know why, but I get this stalker-ish feeling from him. I mean, he is ok and nice, but the way the author wrote his thoughts, about his feelings about Cat and how he felt a connection, I just got weirded out with Ryan.

Also, her family knows what she is?! How could they keep that secret for over 10 years? Even her brother and his girlfriend know. Are they different too? I feel like they are, but they're different from Cat. She's this one thing, but they're in another category? Does that make sense? Oh well.

Overall, I really liked this and I can't wait to read the second book once I have time! 4 Stars!

Author Interview

Q. What gave you the inspiration for this?

Adam - During my senior year of High School, my AP English teacher, Mrs. Powers, had us brainstorm a list of ideas for future writing projects as a creative writing exercise. Three years ago I was digging through a box labeled "OLD SCHOOL STUFF" that my mom had collected over the years. Inside I found the notebook containing those ideas from class. One of them really struck me as I perused the pages, and that idea eventually became the plot line for our series, The Childe. Since the idea was right up our alley in terms of favorite genre (to read/write), my mom was sold on it immediately. Obviously it has been fleshed out considerably, and has changed quite a bit from its original version, but the original idea was a great place to start from though.

Q. How did you think up the name, The Childe? (As in what Cat is, not the title of the book)

Carol and Adam - We actually get asked this question a lot after someone finishes reading The Childe. The true definition of the word Childe is a youth of noble birth. There are other lesser known definitions out there as well, and one of them actually inspired the idea behind what our main character, Cat Colvin, really is. Now, the definition dealing with a youth of noble birth may somewhere down the line play a part in the overall storyline, but we’re not really at that point in our series yet and don’t want to give any spoilers.

Q. Is this only a two book series or will there be more?!

Carol and Adam - The Childe series will actually be a four book series. The third novel, Wicked Darlings, is set to release sometime this winter. And the fourth book, tentatively titled New Dawn, will release most likely either during summer or fall of 2013.

Q. Are you currently doing other projects?

Carol and Adam - Yes, we’re actually wrapping up the first novel in our new dystopian series, entitled The Modified. We’re hoping to release the book either later this month or early October. This series will be a trilogy, and is completely different than The Childe series. It’s a tale about survival, perseverance, sacrifice, and finding love amongst it all. The story takes place in the not-so-distant future where a unified Earth has been thrust into an intergalactic war against an unknown race called the Bringers. Desperate for soldiers, the world’s military issues a worldwide draft for every seventeen-year-old to enlist, and that’s where our main character Kenley Grayson’s story begins. The Modified is geared toward a slightly older crowd and has more romance than our middle grade/young adult crossover series.

Q. What's up with Ms. Amaya? Is she something different too?

Carol and Adam - Well, Miss Amaya was a character that we had such a blast writing for. She has quite the quirky personality and is definitely one of our favorites. Oh, and yes there is definitely something different about her as well. She’s a white witch, but we don’t want to get into too much detail about her because there are some fun things that happen in The Childe, and the sequel Dark Days, that make not knowing a lot about her character all the more fun when you read about her.

Q. Can you tell us how the moonstone protected Cat?

Carol and Adam – The moonstone necklace was given to Cat by Miss Amaya, and with her being a white witch, she cast a spell on it to protect Cat from the dangers around her while wearing it. There’s actually another reason that Miss Amaya gave Cat the moonstone, but it is a side plot in Dark Days, and this is a spoiler free zone. Also, it’s interesting to note that it is believed a moonstone has protective properties for females, which is how we came up with the idea to have it protect Cat.
