The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
Hardcover, 276 pages
Published May 5th 2009 by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Summary:
Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer--they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one terrible and wonderful summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.
My Review:
I think Jenny Han might be one of my favorite authors now.
This book is really smart. It tries to make the book look all happy and everything, but it's not. Not for me. I thought it would just be a nice summer romance kind of book, and it is, but it's not. It's the last summer. The last time of real fun. The last time for them. Conrad and Steven, they're going to college this coming year and they won't have much time for summer. Jeremiah's thinking about football camp for next summer. This is one of their last summers together and they're not even all together. Steven isn't going to be there. And to top it all off, Susannah is sick. Not sick, but sick sick, like cancer.
Gosh, this was sad. I don't think it's supposed to be, but it is. If I was Belly, I would break down crying knowing this was my last summer together with my childhood friends. They're all growing up and they don't really have time to go back. That's what I'm afraid of too. I haven't told many people, but I'm only 13. And this book made me feel really emotional. See, these characters have known each other since birth, they've gone to the same summer house every year. They're basically family and this is their last summer together. Their last summer with all of them together. And then I think of myself being in their place. Plus, I just had to read the teaser of the second book and I find out that one of my favorite character in this book is gone.
But, anyways, let's get over all the sad stuff and think about the good stuff! I was totally rooting for Jeremiah the whole time. Okay, maybe not the whole time, but most of the time. The rest was for Cam. Gosh, Cam. I feel like Belly didn't really give him a chance. She was just comparing him to Conrad the whole time. Plus, they never did skinny dip. Cam was so sweet though, he remembered her after I think 2 years? And he would have been perfect for her if she just opened her eyes outside the Fisher brothers.
Overall, this book was amazing and fantastic! I think this is my favorite read this month! 5 Stars!
