Undeadly by Michele Vail

She's to die for.
Paperback304 pages
Expected publication: November 20th 2012 by Harlequin Teen

Summary:

The day I turned 16, my boyfriend-to-be died. I brought him back to life. Then things got a little weird...Molly Bartolucci wants to blend in, date hottie Rick and keep her zombie-raising abilities on the down-low. Then the god Anubis chooses her to become a reaper-and she accidentally undoes the work of another reaper, Rath. Within days, she’s shipped off to the Nekyia Academy, an elite school that trains the best necromancers in the world. And her personal reaping tutor? Rath. Who seems to hate her guts.Rath will be watching closely to be sure she completes her first assignment-reaping Rick, the boy who should have died. The boy she still wants to be with. To make matters worse, students at the academy start turning up catatonic, and accusations fly-against Molly. The only way out of this mess? To go through hell. Literally.

My Review:

Wow! I can't believe this is my first 'zombie' book! I'm being serious. I have never ever read a book with zombies in it. I've never really liked scary stories at all; I could never sleep days after I read it! But this book isn't actually scary at all!

To be honest, the only reason I wanted to read this was because in the summary, it mentioned the god Anubis and you may or may not know that I am a total history freak. Well. Only in Egyptian and Greek mythology. Percy Jackson and Sadie and Carter Kane got me into that.(; (And btw. Sadie and Anubis would have totally been perfect for together if it was only Anubis and not Walt. Ew to Walt.) Sorry! I'm rambling!(x But really. Read this book! It is perfect!

I have to say something about Molly's 'relationships' though. It's something that I rarely say, but I never really wanted her to end up with Rick. I want her to be with Rath. This is really something that I never say. I've always wanted the main character to end up with Guy #1 and not Guy #2 because they always end up with Guy #2 and Guy #1 was the super caring nice one and Guy #2 was the bad boy type! But I guess since we never really got to know Rick as much as we got to know Rath, it changed my mind about it. And well, Rick died too so I guess that does technically cancel him out.

And by the way guys. I just have to say that in the back of my mind, I was thinking:
"Hey! Wouldn't it be funny if _____ was Molly's real dad?"
And I was right!

Overall, this book is the best! But I have one teeny complaint about it. We never really got to know that much about zombies. This is a zombie kind of book right? There were some zombies in the beginning, but then it just skipped to ghost and spirits in the rest of the book. And, I want to know about the zombie bite that Molly got. Did it get healed? We just got to know she got bitten, but the book never gave us a follow up of what happened. But, see? This book is so good, it can make me change my mind about something that I've always stood by. So, 4.5 Stars!

Author Interview

1. What was the inspiration behind this book?
The inspiration for UNDEADLY was a combination of elements that had been floating around in my writer's mind for a while. For example, what if people could harness the energy of ghosts through a machine? What would the world be like if zombies were controllable creatures? What would happen to a girl who figures out she's some kind of super reaper ... and has a big job ahead of her?

2. When is the sequel coming out?!(:
I'm not sure of the exact date right now, but some time in 2013.

3. Which character do you think is most like you?
I think I'm a lot like Molly in many ways. She struggles with her identity and the sudden, awful changes of her life, like we all do, but at the end of the day, she works through her fear and worry and does the right thing. Also, I'm really sarcastic, even if I don't always voice my snark. Some comments should just stay in your mind. :-)

4. If you could choose between Rick or Rath, who would you pick?(;
Oh, it's Rath all the way. He's got this dark past/bad boy thing going on, along with being confident and loyal. I think a lot of girls enjoy some mystery to their love interests.

5. Who is your favorite God/Goddess in Egyptian mythology?
I gotta go with Isis. She's the epitome of women who are moms, wives, bread winners, and crisis managers. After her husband is killed, she manages to put him back together long enough to make a baby ... and then has to go it alone while he goes to take over duties in the Underworld. She's strong, capable, and figures out ways to make the impossible work.

6. Would you want to be a Necromancer like Molly?

Hmm. I think having some magic would be super cool. Death magic? Well, I don't know. It may not be as helpful as being able to fly or to zap unruly pets. Ha, ha. Still, being able to make a zombie to help with the laundry would be awesome.

7. Just to clarify, Molly's new powers are ones that only the Champion can have right?

Yes. She learns a lot about reapers and necro-magic. The world isn't like she thought it was ... and she's just beginning to understand that there are a lot of things to learn about herself, her abilities, and her responsibilities.
