*Okay, guys! I'm so sorry for not posting anything for a week! I've been getting some down time after that whole jumble of blog tours last week! I know it's bad, but I read the books from my blog tours almost the day before. But, I have a review for you today!
The Shadow Society by Marie Rutkoski
Hardcover, 416 pages
Published October 16th 2012 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux
Summary:
Darcy Jones doesn’t remember anything before the day she was abandoned as a child outside a Chicago firehouse. She has never really belonged anywhere—but she couldn’t have guessed that she comes from an alternate world where the Great Chicago Fire didn’t happen and deadly creatures called Shades terrorize the human population.
Memories begin to haunt Darcy when a new boy arrives at her high school, and he makes her feel both desire and desired in a way she hadn’t thought possible. But Conn’s interest in her is confusing. It doesn’t line up with the way he first looked at her.
As if she were his enemy.
When Conn betrays Darcy, she realizes that she can’t rely on anything—not herself, not the laws of nature, and certainly not him. Darcy decides to infiltrate the Shadow Society and uncover the Shades’ latest terrorist plot. What she finds out will change her world forever . . .
In this smart, compulsively readable novel, master storyteller Marie Rutkoski has crafted an utterly original world, characters you won’t soon forget, and a tale full of intrigue and suspense.
My Review:
I have been waiting a long time to read this book and I finally finished it today! I actually heard about this book from Netgalley. I didn't download it on time though, so it got archived before I could read it and now I have my own physical copy!
I really enjoyed this book though. When I read the back, I didn't think it was very good, but it actually is! What I liked the most is that the author had the idea to create two alternative worlds. I don't think I've ever read something like that and it's very interesting for me to read about something like that. In Darcy's own world, it's our world where the Great Chicago Fire actually happened. In the alternative world, it didn't. I thought it was really cool how the author made it so there were differences between each world.
I also am really excited about Conn and Darcy! I admit though, in the beginning I did not trust him at all and was on Team Orion. But as the story progressed, we start to learn about Orion's dark side. Okay, I really like Marie. Not a lot of authors can make me change my mind about a side after I make up my mind, but she could! I am not officially on Team Conn and I don't like Orion anymore and I'm sure all of you will agree with me.
I am also a big fan of details in books and this author had a lot! She had some details on how food looked and tasted and that gives her some brownie points from me! And she actually added some really good facts on the Chicago fire and about art too.
And I just have to say, I LOVED the ending!
Overall, this book was great! It would get 5 stars, but I don't know, I don't think it deserves 5 stars. It was very well written and it's a great read, but it didn't flow with me enough for 5 stars. 4.5 Stars!
